Circe in Red

Description

A dream I had:
It was getting darker, though not yet night. There was a hill, surrounded by trees from three sides. In front of it you could see the wide and endless plains. On top of the hill stood a portal in which skulls were engraved. People whom I could only hear but not see were summoning something or someone that appeared inside the portal. And with it came the fog and a red glowing. She sood there, dressed in red, her red curls flowing in the wind that came from inside the portal, from another dimension I could only guess.

As I woke up I knew I wanted to draw this powerful being. And I decided her to be Circe, the Greek half-goddess and sorceress who transformed Ulysses´ men into animals when they entered her territory. Ulysses was told a way to prevent that fate for himself by Hermes, the god of sepherds and messengers. He was invited by her. She also freed his compagnions from her spell and brought good winds that would bring them onto the sea again.
So, she is not that bad as most adaptions show her (including DC-Comics´ version of Circe...).

I wanted to show an elegant, yet powerful aspect of her. I changed the hill from my dream into a temple and her clothes aren´t all-red, apparently ;p And I added a few elements typical for Greek culture.

The wings are Sphinx´ wings and as such not originally Greek, but Assyrian ([link]). The greek painters and sculpturers adapted their design along with the Sphinx and other hybridic creatures into their work in the 15th century B.C. or earlier.

The pendants (Klapperanhänger ~ rattling pendants) at her necklace are typical for the Bronze Age, though not necessarily Greek. They were found in Switzerland, Italy and other countries. Their use is unknown. They might be part of horse harness or jewelery. And they were a bit smaller ^^

The diamond-shaped pattern comes from the pattern on the dead amazon´s clothes/skin (?) here: [link]
I don´t think Circe would be an enemy of the amazons. Why should she? She just fights her own style :evillaugh:
(About the painter: ([link]))

Those cuffs on her lower legs are inspired by the dresses of greek figures here: [link]
(Some information here: ([link]))

This version of Circe is (c) by me.
